Performing Arts
The National Association of State Boards of Education noted in 2003 that a substantial body of research highlights the benefits of arts in curriculum and called for stronger emphasis on the arts. Holy Family School has emphasized the arts for decades.
Our music program includes weekly instruction for all grade levels under the instruction of Mrs. Pemberton. Students also have the opportunity to participate in band.
The HFS dance program kicked off in the early 1990s. Students experience the joy of dance through ballet, tap, jazz and tumbling. It is part of the PE curriculum taught by Mrs. Challacombe. The student body even presents a recital each spring.
Holy Family Students can also participate in drama club, declamations, and in-school art lessons.
Volunteers also come into the classroom periodically, through the "Picture Person" program sponsored by Lakeview Museum, to display and discuss famous works of art. They talk to the children about the paintings and the artists who created them.
The arts can bring every subject to life and turn abstractions into concrete reality. Learning through the arts often results in greater academic achievement and higher test scores.
